Tony Robinson boards Channel 5 railway doc
8th October 2018
Tony Robinson is to travel the globe by a train in a six-part Channel 5 travelogue from Rumpus Media.
Around The World In 80 Trains, a co-production with Motion Content Group, is a 6 x 60-minute series in which the Blackadder and Time Team star will travel across Europe before heading east through India, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia and Japan before concluding his trip in the US.Filming is currently underway on the series, in which Robinson will disembark in each location to take part in a number of local experiences. These include herding camels by helicopter, joining a musical parade in New Orleans, abseiling from an enormous tree in a Malaysian rainforest and digging a hot bath in Japan.
It is due to air next year and will become C5’s latest railway-based doc following a six-part recommission of DSP’s The Yorkshire Steam Railway: All Aboard.
Rumpus Media’s head of popular factual Fintan Maguire, who will exec produce alongside Chris Parkin and Motion Content Group’s Abigail Adams, said Robinson is an “insightful and entertaining” host.
“Trains are a romantic and intimate way to see the most spectacular places on the planet,” he added.
Robinson’s previously C5 series include 2017’s Full Fat TV and Motion Content Group’s Coast To Coast, and Elephant House Studios’ Britain’s Great Cathedrals, which aired in March.
The show was ordered by outgoing commissioning editor Sean Doyle, who is leaving to join Channel 4 as deputy head of features and formats.
